Cleaning up communities and inspiring young minds. Through this dynamic urban art project the young people of Success Laventille Secondary School, together with international artist Wendell Mc Shine embark on a series of highly creative community murals in an on going visual dialogue on the walls of the countries most crime infested areas Laventille Trinidad, donated by Coconut Growers Association (CGA). Mc Shine engages the young people and community through a series of creative indoor and outdoor workshops in an attemp to foster togetherness and self-empowerment. As we anxiously await the video documentary made in collaboration with Spanish filmmaker Miquel Galofré these photos holds testimony of Wendell´s passion for public works.

These characters (The Blue Men) can be classified as the shamans of the eternal spirit walk. Messengers and keepers of alchemic formulas.

¨ We can indulge in the magic of what´s inside the doorways of there super selves ¨.

Seen in their bare essentials (sometimes with pants sometimes with flip flops), all metaphors of disguise, they move between worlds via the French Caribbean houses and only the those that raise there vibrational force can communicate with them.

They mix the potions of above so below never showing there human faces and silently stalking the landscape aware of the unseen beauty and potential of human beings.

ARTS PROJECT was created by Mexican based artist Wendell Mc Shine and introduced into his home country of Trinidad and Tobago.
It promotes self awareness in young people through a series of creative urban art workshops.
"The mission is to plant seeds of consciousness in our youth´s through art so that they can live their full potential and bring up their communities.
These avenues didn´t exist when I was growing up in the islands, it´s my personal vision to give back to my people."

The Project created a tapestry in which the concept of Self Awareness was interwoven through the many creative workshops: film production, designs, music therapy, animation and urban techniques of mural making.

Animation Art- Music Video

ANIMATION CONCEPT: CREATOR/ PRODUCER - ARTIST WENDELL MC SHINE

International artist Wendell Mc Shine is from the island of “the Carnival” Trinidad and Tobago. Currently based and producing work in Mexico City there’s a lucid cross pollination expressed through stunning iconography. When one moves full heartedly into the doorway of Wendell’s, A.K.A. Shine’s work, a multi level narrative, which constructs upon itself is discovered.

A natural synchronicity exists in Mexico referred to as “Mayan Timing” that connects my 2008 body of work, “La Puerta Abierta” (The Open Door) and the commissioned animation “Prosper”. This special animated music video can be seen as an emotional out pouring of healing words and visuals stitching together the delicate fabric of the human condition and Trinidadian post colonial nationalism.

The video is captivating and emotionally charged. I was creating in my studio in Mexico City and the only thing that was connecting me to my roots was an unsettling feeling to regain the kindness that we have been loosing towards each other; then came an urge to do something about it.

The animation prosper as i see it aids in the healing process of a people scared by the horrors of slavery.
I chose stop motion animation as a medium because of it's organic nature. This allowed me to explore textures and emotions. It was a physical process in which I had to put myself into the characters in order to inject their movements with their individual multidimensional spirit.

The color correction of the video was purposely manipulated to give a sense of Trinidadian nostalgic warmth in a super-realistic way. Packed with a lot of color and textures the overall tone has a soft ambiance that it is compatible with the essence of the island.

In choosing to give answers and not just stating problems, I created a sequence where there's a character, representing the layman, dispondent in an impoverished pineapple field. In resolving itself
a hand places the jewel star (symbol of courage) into his chest “The Love Zone” activating positive consciousness motivating the character to contribute to his community by generating fruits (Pineapples, symbol of prosperity).

The Concept Behind
The prospects of coming back to Trinidad inspired chapter two, "La Puerta Abierta", which kicks off this 2009 body of work from my concept, "Into the Blue Desert" (a continuos exploration of the human condition). I traveled with some empty and half laid out canvases anxiously anticipating the return to my native land. As I touched my home ground I set up my studio against the door of my childhood bedroom, a home that witnessed a struggle to develop my work against all odds. In this, La Horquetta housing project, aka "The Whole", the value of self worth is placed on gold chains, cell phones, cable-tv and cars. The hustle for paper (money) intoxicates with drugs the hearts, minds and bodies of lost souls striving for the next fix at whatever cost.

This series of works reflect this battle, not just to stay alive and walk as a ghost or a bandit, but to create and formulate my own congruent reality where naked feet never touch the streets but hover over them, where elongated mouths express their truths rather than hiding them with shame, where liquor bottles become souvenirs of tainted memories, where skulls of fallen men and hibiscus flowers preside on headpieces as offerings at the doorstep of death and paying homage to the essence of life.

These characters (Los Santos), in their bare essentials (sometimes with pants sometimes with jokey shorts), never show their face and silently stalk the landscape aware of the unseen beauty and potential of the ghetto: the young girl studying to complete her academic path, the strong father keeping his family together, the palm trees standing proud, the birds whistling unspoken secrets. The color palette is intense, influenced by the bright and dramatic colors of my surroundings and carnival. Los Santos are posed purposely as to invoke ideas of spirituality and self awareness.

An Intoxcicateting Jurney into a defying soul

This is one chapter of my stroy titled "Passages from the book of ickarus"
Ickarus is falling through different dimensions, he is in constant transition but yet in the moment and in this chapter he´s caught up in the perception of what is the underworld. In ¨Mezcal Crows and Bandidos¨ we get a chance to meet all of the characters that surround him in this world.

I like mixing metaphors, so in my world what appears to be bad is really good and vise versa. The Bandidos look tuff and disobedient but they are really protectors of truth ( symbolized by the flower that comes out of their noses). They protect the heart of the fallen Ickarus and are commanded by the wolfs Wilber and Santos who are the overseers of the moment. They see the world in black and white.

When the Bandidos drink the Mezcal they gain the power to transmutate into the Crows who can then see into the outer world (earth) and keep the balance by keeping the Humming Birds in check since they use their beauty to confuse and encourage Ickarus off his path.

La Sabia found her way into my work and it feels like she is who contains everything, she is the knower of all and represents pure intuition. She uses the magic of the hibiscus flower to feed the Humming Birds as she knows that the world is not black and white. The gem stars that travel with her will lead this story into the next chapter, "La Puerta Arbierta".

ABSOLUT URBAN ARTS PROJECT
The Absolut Creative District was an Absolut World contained within Mexico City. This world was created to incorporated the processes of several artistic disciplines; fashion, cinema and
visual arts.

However, the process started weeks before, showcasing international artists in an urban setting where everyday people could interact with them and see first hand what it takes to create their art.

Crystal Boxes in parks and shopping centers were used as the artists’ studios in which direct contact with people provoked an interaction between the public and the artists, the artist and his work.

4 antique Japanese Trolley busses were intervened and used as canvases.
The work produced in the crystal boxes was re-located into the Creative District at the culmination of this campaign, invitees had the opportunity to interact with the artist still in their process. Artist Wendell Mc Shine used black chalk board paint as his surface for developing animations made directly onto the base using chalk. Each day for a 5 day period one minute of animation will be shot frame by frame adding up to a 5 minute short that was projected in the final event.

Urban artist Wendell Mc Shine developed a series of motion graphic animations that turned the entire store front into a world of mythical organic cretuters, tropical dragons, exotic plants and humming birds that came together to represented the launch kick off party, "Adidas Grun" .
These projected animations in themselves are a testimony to the creative rebelliousness of self expression that the artist brings to the world of urban arts.

I relate closely to the main character Ickarus, who defies his father and peruses his own destiny. The symbol of the sun represents my island and the ocean in which he´s falling into is the journey that I took to follow my art.

Raw, transcendental and overly mystifying it is no surprise that International artist Wendell Mc Shine is from the island of “the Carnival” Trinidad and Tobago. Currently based and producing work in Mexico City there’s a lucid cross pollination expressed through stunning iconography.

When one moves full heartedly into the doorway of Wendell’s, A.K.A. Shine’s work, a multi level narrative, which constructs upon itself is discovered. Bandidos, Jewel Stars, King Crows, Nahuales, Humming Birds, mezcal bottles, plantation houses, skulls, towering coconut trees, hibiscus flowers, rubber ‘slippers’, etc., coexist in a world of wooden panels, canvases, organic animations and paper mache masks.

“Coming up with dignity and focus through challenging conditions in the Caribbean ghetto, the 9th of ten brothers and sisters, has inspired me to delve into the avenues of the human condition and nature. In `the third world´, where opportunities don’t come by unless you have courage, spirit and conviction has been an undercover blessing allowing me to draw from my own life experiences and giving me a huge hunger to tell multidimensional stories that inspire.”

Before leaving Trinidad his paintings showcased in Caribbean galleries and his illustrations covered the regions magazines and newspapers. Through his studies in Information Graphics at the Reuters News Foundation in London and the University of Pamplona Spain, he started to incorporate elements of graphic design into his fine art array of unique paintings and explored animation. Now his work blurs the line of visual communications and moving images.

His animated shorts play an intrinsic roll in his art installations and have gained international recognition: Music video “Prosper” for 12 The Band, "Sunfly" is part of the DVD compilation of Michel Goundry’s film, "The Science of Sleep." ¨El Baile del Chihuahua¨ a collaboration with Mexican video artist Fernando Llanos was featured in FICCO. He’s produced several shorts for IDN (International Design Network). Televisa has used his animations and creative direction for its television network image campaigns.

Shine’s murals, paintings and video installations have been showcased, reviewed and in-cooperated widely in the urban art market: Adidas Originals, Absolute Vodka, Harper's Bazaar, Juxtapose Online Magazine, Canvas Magazine, INDI Rocks Magazine, Elaboratorio Urban Art Gallery/ Upper Playground, Artrio Art Space, Art Auction “Mexico Vivo” (along with Mexican artist Javier Marin, Francisco Toledo, Jose Luis Cuevas to name a few), London Print Studios, Fahrenheit Contemporary Art Magazine.
